Carlyn Iverson DescriptionThis painting is a small section of a mural created for a nature center. The full mural depicts the edge of a small fresh water lake with the aquatic ecosystem both along the shore and beneath the surface. The loon is a diving bird that eats fish, crayfish and plant material. The loon, Gavia immer, only spends time on land for nesting purposes. These birds migrate from northern latitude locations south during the winter season. Loon populations have dwindled and are a species of concern as their habitat continues to be lost through human encroachment.
