They contain their own DNA and reproduce themselves inside each cell. Every cell (except red blood cells) have 100's inside. The disease is caused by mutations in the genes (the DNA) or enzyme defectswith in the mitochondria. They then fail to produce energy for cell use and the body's cells have less energy than they need. The cells fail to function well and can die. As cells fail, whole organ systems fail.
