DescriptionThe Ivory-billed woodpecker, Campephilus principalis, was famously depicted by Audubon. By the 1930's it was virtually extinct and the logging of the Singer Tract in Louisiana apparently sealed its fate. The illustration depicts a female arriving at a nest hole in a Water Tupelo (Nyssa acquatica). Her mate is shown flying in the distance. The last confirmed sighting was made in 1944 and the bird is likely extinct.
