»Michael Rothman DescriptionThe Dodo, Raphus cucullatus, was likely extinct by the year 1693, barely five decades after the colonization of Mauritius Island by the Dutch. The illustration depicts a group of Dodos, circa 1500, in a lowland moist forest feeding upon the fruits of a Latania loddigessi palm. Over hunting, egg predation by introduced rats, and the destruction of the native forests likely caused the extinction of this large flightless pigeon.
