DescriptionThe world's largest Pinniped, the Walrus, Odobenus rosmarus, has a nearly circumpolar range. Tusks are present in adults of both genders, but are larger and longer in the male. Walruses use their tusks to rake the muddy substrates in the near shore continental shelves. Their whiskers help detect of prey, typically shellfish, hiding in the muck. Walruses have been recorded as staying submerged for almost 24 minutes per dive.
