»Carel Brest van Kempen DescriptionKerangas are biologically impoverished dwarf forests that occur on Borneo. The soil is acidic, sandy and heavily leached. Included in this painting are shed leaves of the tree Cratoxylum glaucum and needles of the podocarp Dacrydium becarii. Mosses of the family Calymperaceae, the slipper orchid Paphiopedilum javanicum and the pitcher Nepenthes ampullaria grow from the floor while pitchers of N. stenophylla hang from vines. Other subjects include a hatchling Duméril's Monitor (Varanus dumerilii), Red Swampdragon (Agrionoptera insignis), the land snail Dyakia kintana, a Giant Forest Ant (Camponotus gigas), and a procession of Longipeditermes longipes termites.
